Mutxamel History: After the Christian reconquest Mutxamel was held under the Crown of Castile for about 50 years or so, until the year 1296, when it became part of the Kingdom of Valencia under the reign of James the Just. Its parish church was begun in 1511. In the late sixteenth century the Tibi dam was constructed, which subsequently channeled the waters of the river Monnegre and allowed to substantially improve agriculture in the area. Following this, in 1580 Mutxamel was awarded the title "Universidad" (a title which gave certain municipal independence) and real privilege, in 1628 Mutxamel was segregated from Alicante, becoming self-governing but voluntarily returned to be part of Alicante in 1653.During the War of Succession was sacked by the troops of the Archduke Charles of Austria. From the eighteenth century, many wealthy families from Alicante built a second home in Mutxamel. These wealthy families built beautiful buildings, houses or simply palatial villas and palaces. Just from one of these palaces, Peñacerrada , became an independent municipality as the place of Peñacerrada (currently located in the north of town) in 1789, although again incorporated into Mutxamel in 1846. The town later fell into decline and urbanistically stagnated until 1928, when the city acquired some land east of town to open many old streets to the current La Rambla, the new part of town was developed with a new street layout. During the Civil War, Mutxamel remained in Republican territory. Its proximity to the capital (Alicante) ultimately helped both its economy and its demographics, from mid-twentieth century, the town is built within a metropolitan area centered on the city of Alicante.
